samenvatting: L'histoire des transsexuels en France est à la croisée de plusieurs chemins. Celui, tout d'abord, d'hommes et de femmes ne se reconnaissant pas dans leur sexe de naissance et qui, grâce à l'activisme de certains chirurgiens et aux progrès de la médecine, purent choisir le corps qui correspondait à leur véritable identité. Celui aussi de personnalités issues de la société civile ou du monde de la nuit, ainsi que des politiques et des religieux qui, chacun à leur manière, ont contribué à sortir la transsexualité de la marginalité et à exiger son respect. Tout au long du vingtième siècle, la question transsexuelle n'aura eu de cesse d'occuper l'espace public, remettant en cause la conception même de genre. Ce livre raconte le parcours des pionnières (Michel-Marie Poulain, Marie André Schwidenhammer), la naissance d'une culture cabaret transgenre, sous l'égide de Coccinelle, et les débuts du militantisme. L'auteur nous fait entendre la voix de celles et ceux qui sont allés au bout de leurs questionnements identitaires et ont offert un visage et une légitimité à leur cause. Au-delà de son intérêt historique, ce texte, illustré de nombreux documents, permet de comprendre les enjeux du transsexualisme et de la lutte contre la transphobie. Maxime Foerster est docteur ès Lettres et auteur de plusieurs essais autour de la sexualité. La collection Lattrape-corps est une collection dessais sur limaginaire du corps.

samenvatting: For more than 30 years, New York based photographer and painter Mariette Pathy Allen has been documenting transgender culture worldwide; in 2004 she won the Lambda Literary Award for her monograph The Gender Frontier. In her new publication, TransCuba, Allen focuses on the transgender community of Cuba, especially its growing visibility and acceptance in a country whose government is transitioning into a more relaxed model of communism under Raúl Castro's presidency. This publication therefore records a cultural watershed within Cuba. In addition to color photographs and interviews by Allen, the book also includes a contribution from Raúl Castro's daughter, Mariela Castro, who is the director of the Cuban National Center for Sex Education in Havana. In 2005, Castro proposed a project, which became law three years later, to allow transgender individuals to receive sex reassignment surgery and change their legal gender.

samenvatting: Die Ausstellung 'Homosexualität_en', die zeitgleich im Schwulen Museum* und im Deutschen Historischen Museum zu sehen ist, und der vorliegende Begleitband geben einen Überblick über den gesellschaftlichen Umgang mit Homosexualität und Geschlecht unter Aspekten sozialer, juristischer und wissenschaftlicher Unterdrückung. Zugleich dokumentieren sie die dauerhaften Kämpfe um Gleichberechtigung und legen hier den Schwerpunkt auf die Entwicklung seit der Liberalisierung des § 175 im Jahr 1969 in der Bundesrepublik. Homosexualität, wie wir sie heute verstehen, begreift die Ausstellung als eine Erfindung der Moderne. Entsprechend zeigt sie die historische Entwicklung seit dem späten 19. Jahrhundert und schließt mit einem umfangreichen Blick in die Gegenwart. Denn heute steht die Voraussetzung für Hetero- wie Homosexualität, nämlich die Annahme von nur zwei Geschlechtern, zur Debatte. Sie wird in kulturwissenschaftlichen wie politischen Diskussionen zugunsten einer Vielfalt von geschlechtlichen Identitäten in Frage gestellt. Während im Deutschen Historischen Museum die geschichtliche Perspektive auf Homosexualität im Zentrum steht, thematisieren im Schwulen Museum* zeitgenössische Kunstwerke den gegenwärtigen Umgang mit Sexualität und Geschlecht. samenvatting: The counseling profession calls for a strength-based conceptualization of the personal, developmental, emotional, relational, and mental health issues facing transgender clients. In this article, the authors suggest utilizing the evidence-based indivisible self wellness (IS-Wel) model to conceptualize the experiences of transgender individuals. The authors describe experiences of transgender persons, for the purpose of educating counselors on the challenges of gender and sexual orientation, societal normative issues, and transgender culture. Lastly, the authors illustrate the use of the IS-Wel model for conceptualization of the transgender experience within the normative heterosexist social and cultural climate.
